Asmita Prasad:
The state of the world economy has been shaky since the global recession in 2008, leaving many people jobless and many were even forced out of their homes due to mortgage woes. Consumerist as we are, the economic crisis appears to be heightened when we find that we cannot afford the same luxuries that we could when the inflow of money was smoother. To highlight the severity of personal economic meltdown and just how depressing and overwhelming the current economic climate is, designer Sebastian Errazuriz has created the Drowning in Debt Salt and Pepper Shaker Set.

Drowning in Debt Salt and Pepper Shaker Set

The set features an office worker with his work briefcase inside the shaker itself, commenting on the direness of the current global economic climate and how badly it affects the lives of the workers working at the grassroots levels in multinational companies. As the salt and pepper is consumed, the workers emerge from the salt or pepper that symbolize debt or unemployment only to be flooded by it once again when the shakers are refilled.

Drowning in Debt Salt and Pepper Shaker Set

In a way, the Drowning in Debt Salt and Pepper Shaker set makes a dark comment about the nature of debt and the struggle of the average officegoer in our times who tries to break free from the vicious cycle of economic meltdown and debt only to be engulfed by it once again.

Via: MHLMagazine/MocoLoco

2 Vote(s)

Debanjan Singha:
Solar cells and other sustainable sources of energies are widely used as efficient cooling and heating systems in buildings across the world, but two new 25-storied buildings in Abu-Dhabi have come up with a unique innovation to help manage building temperatures effectively. The automated sun-screen systems were designed by globally acclaimed architectural powerhouse Aedas. These sun-screen systems are positioned on the periphery of the buildings and are opened and closed depending on the intensity of the sun's heat.

Sun-Screen Systems

The sun-screen systems at Al-Bahar buildings have striking similarity to oversized screens comprising origami triangles. The sun-screens are positioned at a distance of two meters from the buildings' periphery on a frame that is similar to a "mashrabiya," the Arab equivalent of shade-producing nets that are a common place in Middle Eastern architecture. The mashrabiya like frame and the triangles cover the majority of the building's outer facade barring the apex of the towers. The umbrella-shaped triangles have fiber glass coating upon them and are digitally programmed to open and close depending on the sun's glare, to help shade the building's interior from getting heated. As the sun moves further downwards along its daily trajectory and the intensity of its heat diminishes, the triangles shift away from its path and the devices are shut automatically as dusk approaches.

As a result of the effective functioning of its giant screens, the Abu-Dhabi Investment Council owned Al-Bahar Towers, are expected to drastically lessen their dependence on air conditioners in comparison to their counterparts. Another novel innovation brought about these sun-screen systems includes the discarding of heavily tinted windows and artificial interior lighting and replacing them with inlets for receiving higher levels of natural light inside. Photovoltaic cells, positioned on the south-facing roofs of either tower, continue to generate roughly five percent of the buildings' total energy requirements. The project which is slated to be completed in the next few months has quite recently won the prestigious award conferred by the Council on tall Buildings and Urban Habitats rewarding sustainability in architectural entrepreneurship across the globe.

Reference Link: http://www.springwise.com/eco_sustainability/computer-controlled-sun-screens-abu-dhabi-towers-cool/

3 Vote(s)

Based in Ahmedabad, India, the project was completed on 10th June, 2012. The project is currently on display at in the main plaza of the Ahmedabad, india-based CEPT University's School of Interior Design (SID). The structure of the project resembles a canopy as well as dried out foliage which makes it an ideal companion to shady trees as well as nature-themed interior décor. The ‘Wooden Foliage’ also serves as an interactive light sculpture that plays with light and creates a playful show of shadows on the ground that changes as the angle of the sunlight changes through the day.
Asmita Prasad:
Are you tired of picking up decor accessories made of bamboo and rattan to make your Asian-inspired décor appear more authentic? Then, you're simply going to love this lovely new Viva Docking Speaker by designer Jang se-chan. Inspired by the Japanese art of paper folding AKA origami, the docking speaker comes folded flat though it can simply be twisted and turned into a cube-shaped speaker. The perfect space saving solution for people who do not like to see their countertops, tabletops, shelves and mantle-tops cluttered with audio accessories that are used occasionally.

Origami-inspired Viva Docking Speaker

The Viva Docking Speaker uses the reverberation of sound within the empty cube to create a deep base and produce a surround sound effect which makes the docked smartphone, android-based phone or the iPhone sound seamlessly loud yet high fidelity. However, what can be a bit of a turn off for a few users is the fact that the Viva Docking Speaker is fashioned out of an aluminum mesh with a chrome finish which as we know tends to corrupt the purity of sound as compared to wood- or paper-pulp based speakers. On the plus side, the Viva Docking Speaker is extremely portable and can even be carried around in one's pocket after being folded flat which makes it a great iPhone or Android phone accessory for music lovers on the go.

Via: Yanko Design

2 Vote(s)

Jaspreet Kaur Walia:
Sound systems have gone through a variety of changes over the years and each change has been accepted with open arms all across the globe. Taking it a step further is designer Jo Eunhee, who has come with a sound system that will give an all new meaning to touch surfaces.

Tangible Textural Interface

Touch screens have won many hearts and happen to attract people because of its easy usage. But besides all the advantages, these touch screens have a hard surface and lack the desired softness. Keeping this in mind, the designer has developed the Tangible Textural Interface or TTI, which feels like a fabric when touched. The all new sound system boasts of an interactive, tactile surface that will change the whole experience of listening to music.

Tangible Textural Interface, as is suggestive from the name, has a textile interface that solves three main purposes. It works as an equalizer, controls volume and has backward and forward controls. The hands of a user will sink inside the fabric when interacting with the device when changing the volume or track, which is quite striking. The design comprises of sensors as well as memory shape alloys, which allows such an interaction.

Tangible Textural Interface is nothing like any other regular sound system we get to see in the market. The product is quite playful and its reshaping properties are bound to leave people wheezing. So, next time when you feel like changing the volume or track all you have to do is push your finger in the fabric and see magic unfurl.

Via: Fastcodesign

2 Vote(s)

Asmita Prasad:
You'd think a prerequisite to building a tree house would be having trees. But for the innovative designers of the 21st century, no challenge is to too big and a team of designers actually came up with a tree-less tree house in 2010. Dubbed Tentsile, the tree house apparently can be set up almost anywhere even if the particular location has no trees to hang it from whatsoever. For the average user, the Tentsile would appear to be more of an airborne tent or even a covered hammock but its creators insist that it is in fact a portable tree house. Designed to be set up in just half an hour, the portable tree house is made out of waterproof polyester which makes it ideal for use in almost all climates.

Tentsile Portable Tree House

Shaped like a three-legged starfish, the inverted pyramid shape of the Tentsile portable tree house can be hung from its self-supportive base or even anchored from trees depending on the user's location. The tent/hammock thus stays suspended in mid air with no contact from the ground other than the anchoring base. This allows it to be used over wet ground, beach or snow.

Tentsile Portable Tree house is offered in 2-person, 5-person and 8-person models which make it the ideal way to travel in a group and provides the same comfort of cohabitation as a tent with the same level of functionality as a tree house or a hammock. According to its designers, the Tentsile would be ideal for use by the military, campers, wildlife documentarians and photographers, extreme sportsmen, biological researchers and scientific teams. Weighing between 11-18 lbs, the two-person Tentsile model retails for $3,000 and the 8-person models costs just over $12,000.

Via: Inhabitat/Tree Hugger

2 Vote(s)

Asmita Prasad:
No matter how tech-intensive a digital watch is, nothing can quite ever mimic the simplicity and intuitive minimalism of the classic analog watch. Since the interface of the analog watch has almost become embedded within the cultural consciousness, designer Niels Astrup decided to use it as an inspiration for his Touch Skin Watch that delivered the analog experience to people without sacrificing the contemporary touch screen functionality that modern users require. The highly customizable watch comes with downloadable skins which allow its OLED screen to be personalized to the requirements of individual users. The digital accessory retains the classic interface of the minimalist analogue watch and fits it within a touch sensitive design that can be matched to dress codes and connected to computers and smartphones via Bluetooth connectivity as well.

Touch Skin Watch

The Touch Skin Watch normally stays in a stealth mode which saves battery power. The watch's interface can be switched from stealth/idle mode to night/normal mode for three seconds when the user presses the screen with his finger. When the screen is pressed with two fingers, the watch switches into Date mode for a period of three seconds. When the user touches the screen with three fingers, the Touch Skin Watch allows the user to choose between different skins installed in the watch. The watch's gift box also acts like a wireless charger and begins charging the watch via and the magnetic lock in the wristband as soon as the user places the watch in the box.

Weighing approximately 80 grams, the Touch Skin Watch also features a 16GB micro SD RAM which is upgradable. The watch runs on a multi-core processor which can be either an ARM or an Nvidia Tegra Type II/III.
Asmita Prasad:
3D printing may not be at the level where it can print out food or readymade good just yet but that isn't stopping pioneers from experimenting in that direction. Created by Janina Alleyne, UK-based fashion footwear designer, the collection of shoes, including pairs called The Exoskeleton, The Reptile and The Scorpion, are all printed out via a 3D printer and the crafty high heels promise to usher in an era of customized shoes with their advent.

3D printed shoes by Janina Alleyne

Using 3D modeler Inner Leaf, three very unusual sets of shoes were printed out by the designer in separate pieces which were later joined and finished by hand.
Asmita Prasad:
Built in Byron Bay, Australia, the East House designed by Built-Environment Practice shows exactly how an existing structure can be reconfigured into a contemporary beach house that doesn't incur a huge carbon footprint. The passive house was built upon a brick house constructed in the ‘90s to create a modern home near that beach that displays a great affinity to the coastal environment without removing the inhabitants too far away from the comforts of a modern lifestyle. The passive house utilizes several solar elements to provide clean green power to the inhabitants while extensive, overlapping spatial zones are created within a thermal mass wall that is supported by timber screening, internal joinery and spatial interlocking ribbons.

East House by Built-Environment Practice

The home comes with plenty of glass walls and large windows that allow the greenery outdoor to filter in while the timber roof and soft surfaces keep the tone inside the house light and fresh.
Jaspreet Kaur Walia:
Milk is an important part of our life and there is no household that can go without the supply of this white liquid even for a single day. But, it's time you stop drinking milk and start wearing it for that added glow. Anke Domaske from Germany has come up with a new textile that looks like silk and has been made using milk. Christened Qmilch, the textile is extremely soft and durable, folds like silk, but can be washed like cotton.

Qmilch

The German fashion designer and biochemist's sustainable textile made completely from organic milk was given the innovation award by the Textile Research Association, Germany, giving it the status of a new fabric. The Eco-friendly fiber will prove to be quite beneficial for people who suffer from skin allergies, which are result of chemical loaded textiles. The fashion designer along with her team reduced milk to a protein powder, which was later boiled and pressed into strands. The strands obtained during the whole process were then woven into fabric, which has been named Qmilch and is environmentally friendly in nature.

The fabric can also be given a heavy texture by spinning strands in a rough way. Apart from this, the same fabric can be made to look shinny and smooth, which will feel soft just like a normal jersey material does. Qmilch is a new picture of green fashion, which will not only bring down waste produced when oil byproducts are used, but will also kill our dependency on such sources. It is bound to create ripples in the clothing and fashion industry because of its Eco-friendly properties.

Via: Fastcodesign

1 Vote(s)

Asmita Prasad:
Chains have always been a cool addition to any form of footwear and can even make demure patent pumps look edgy. But for people who prize political correctness over being just plain cool, even a sloppy sneaker can appear to be completely outrageous. And that's just what happened when Adidas Originals posted a picture of its latest creation, the JS Roundhouse Mids, on Facebook.

Adidas sparks outrage with ‘shackle' sneakers

Even though the post received 38,536 "likes", 4,223 "comments" and 9,097 "shares", Adidas was forced to cancel the launch of the shoe because a lot of people objected to the orange plastic chains and lock design dubbing it symbolic of racism. The majority of the people who viewed the June 14 post claimed that the design looked like the shackles used to contain people of color sold as slaves. Some even went as far to say that anyone who chose to wear these shoes would be voluntarily supporting slavery.

The company dismissed the criticism in a press statement and stated that the design had nothing to do with slavery and were simply a unique and outrageous take on fashion by designer Jeremy Scott. Scott's previous creations have featured Mickey Mouse and panda heads which have been wildly popular. A few Adidas fans dubbed the outrage hilarious and defended the design as being playful though Adidas was forced to issue an apology and retract the shoes from the market.

Via: NY Daily News

1 Vote(s)

Surbhi Sharma:
Having a cup of coffee over a coffee table that lets fish traverse the world, does sound quite exciting. Yes, it is for real. The world map aquarium makes the fins species feel they are travelling across the globe, with continents carved perfectly in this aquarium cum coffee table. This aquarium can give the fishes a world they must have never dreamt of, not even the coffee drinker.

World Map Aquarium

Your finned aquatics will definitely love you for this. Designed by Takuro Yamamoto, this aquarium has the potential to help you unwind over a cup of coffee by looking at the fishes swimming across continents and countries. This world map aquarium has also helped the brainy designer Takuro Yamamoto clinch a TIFF award. Artistically appealing, this fish house can be your pick if you are an aquatic life lover.

This striking coffee table aquarium was created as a project for designboom's TIFF awards. This world map like aquarium has been intricately cut into shape of continents to help you enjoy the world along with the fishes. The miniscule fish inhabitants of this coffee table aquarium can explore the world in seconds. The world map aquarium is surely a conceptual piece of art and not a functional model. So now you can think proudly of owning an aquarium and yet not confining the fishes to a limited world. Get over the guilt of detaining the fishes in a restricted area by helping them reconnoiter the world in jiffies. You can enjoy the lovely view of fishes in water over a cup of coffee and be close to nature.

Via: Gizmodo

1 Vote(s)

Surbhi Sharma:
An interior designer can translate your living style whims and fancies into real life ideas. Architecture is all about thinking beyond the routine way of life and Daan Mulder is one of such artists. This renowned interior designer has crafted a Function Table which is truly unconventional.
Deepon Mitra:
71% of the Earth's surface is water. Marine biologists and ocean floor cartographers opine that only 20% of the world's oceans have been explored. What lies beneath the murky depths of the world's blue? What mysteries do the crashing waves hide? Wouldn't we like to know?! There could be fantastic new lifeforms which may better give us an understanding on how life evolved on earth, or, there could be monsters straight from our worst nightmares. Much needs to be explored in the seas and oceans of the world can be well illustrated with the enigma of the giant squid (for instance). We only have dead specimens to prove their existence but we have yet to find one in its natural habitat. But that may be a thing of the past with the new SeaOrbiter coming into the picture.

The SeaOrbiter

It seems that sci fi creations are slowly turning into reality again (Jules Verne would be proud!). The SeaOrbiter ocean explorer is a futuristic vessel which is still in its conceptual stage. Designed by Jacques Rougerie (a French architect ), he has been waiting for his dream to come true for almost 12 years now. Investors and Sponsors have seen its potential and construction of the vessel will start in October and may be completed within 2013.

The Schematics

The SeaOrbiter ocean explorer looks like a gargantuan white aquatic cockroach (complete with feelers!). It is the world's first free standing vertical vessel that will stand 170 feet (51 m) into the air. To better serve its purpose, half of the vessel will remain submerged underwater at all times, just like an iceberg. Considering the implications, and the vast potential of exploring and charting the world's oceans and oceanic life, the project's cost of US $52.7 million is extremely measly (taking into account the millions of dollars that are still being invested in the International Space Station). In addition, the SeaOrbiter will give marine biologists and scientists an opportunity to study marine life in their natural habitat, in real time. The vessel will accommodate 18 scientists/biologists and crew who will remain onboard the vessel. Rougerie has dubbed them the "Oceanauts", who will stay on the vessel to observe and study ocean life under its transparent hull.

Now for the specifics, the semi submersible SeaOrbiter will be divided into 2 major parts. There will be a submerged chamber that goes down 102 feet (31 m) below sea level. This will be the observation level. The part above the sea level will have an open air terrace that can be used both for observation and for sun bathing! Just like Verne's Nautilus, the submerged section of the SeaOrbiter will have panoramic windows and huge portholes (with powerful lights that will illuminate a radius of about 750m for clear visibility). A world class, mobile ocean observatory-that's what the SeaOrbiter is! The vessel will also be outfitted with the latest in sonar and oceanographic observational equipment which will continuously feed and receive data to and fro from satellites. There is also a state-of-the-art pressurized module (with multiple levels) that will allow the ‘oceanauts' to delve into previously unexplored depths. The vessel will be powered by non conventional sources of energy (like, tidal, solar and wind energy) and thus will neither leave any carbon footprint nor contaminate the oceans.

The Scale Model

Rougerie will be showcasing his SeaOrbiter ocean explorer project at the International Expo, 2012, in Yeosu, S. Korea with a 1:20 scale model of the vessel. An early Christmas present for marine scientists? Sure looks like one!

Via: GizMag

1 Vote(s)

The self-taught artist combines elements from disciplines such as painting, sculpting and photography to create art "out of" paper instead of "on" the paper itself.

Canis Major by Nathalie Boutté

Gaia by Nathalie Boutté

To create these stunning images, the French artist cuts long strips of paper and then pastes them together to give the images a feather-like texture.
Asmita Prasad:
Even though robotic automated vacuum cleaners are all the rage in the home maintenance department these days, nothing beats the kind of cleaning that your regular bristled broom can get you. But most brooms experience splayed bristles when rested working end down and tend to get knocked over when rested from the handle. To make this problem redundant, designer Joseph Guerra has created the Suna Broom which comes with a pivoting head that allows the broom to be stored bristle side down without worrying about the bristles splaying.

Suna Broom by Joseph Guerra

Suna Broom by Joseph Guerra

Part of the designer's finished senior year thesis at the Rhode Island School of Design, the broom was inspired by the equipment used in a traditional Japanese Zen Garden for raking the sand. Using the form of the rake and the repetitive action evoking meditative contemplation, the Suna Broom comes fitted with a detachable head that makes it easier to use with dust pans and to access distant corners.

Suna Broom by Joseph Guerra

This detachable pivoting head snaps into place via magnets that lets it be used as a long stemmed broom when large areas need sweeping as well as a hand-duster for cleaning smaller areas.
Deepon Mitra:
Austrian sculptor Franz West's "Gekröse" sold out on the first day of its exhibit for a seven digit sum. Considering its humungous size one would know that the sculpture was bought by person with an extremely large house! Jona Lueddeckens, from the gallery, remarks that this is Franz's biggest creation till date.

The sculpture itself

"Gekröse" is titanic. One of its kind, the sculpture is probably one of the biggest pieces of contemporary art. Its size is perhaps the most striking feature of its appearance. It is monumental and intimidating, yet playful and whimsical in same measures. This imposing piece of art was colored a cheerful rosy hue of which gives a jocund tone to the overall dynamics and flow of the sculpture. A single glance at this exceedingly convoluted structure raises several images in the mind of the beholder. The person watching it can interpret as anything from a humungous primeval cephalopod to a scaled up representation of the human intestines to a gigantic pile of feces (depending on how sophisticated or daft the imagination is!). Franz has always been known for sculptures that have had some form of attached functions. They are essentially artistic furniture which can serve as a place for social interaction. This welded aluminum sculpture however seems to represent a whole new vista of development within Franz's opus.

West began his days in Vienna during the 60s. Actionism in art and sculpture was the word of the day during those times. Franz started out with this movement and his works portrayed radical public behavior which meant to stir up the passivity in the art world. During the 70s he pioneered a new sculpture form called ‘Passstueke' or ‘the Adaptives'. They were crude sculptures made of plaster that were quite small and portable. The sculptures could be deemed as completed only when their viewer interacted with them in a physical manner. This inspired his later works and ultimately the "Gekröse".

Via: DesignBoom

1 Vote(s)

Sahil Khurana:
New Yorkers have felt the pinch of water paucity, given the extreme conditions of fresh water availability. Keeping this thought in mind, they have decided to bring about a subtle awareness for this general cause. By painting the water tanks in colorful colors, some of the famous artists have actually been able to showcase their work, yet bringing about a much needed awareness in terms of design, and the need for water conservation.

Image 1

As the water levels start to recede in New York, the urgent need for conservation of the precious resource came to the fore. With this thought in mind, Kickstarter decided to unleash the creative prowess of a few famous artists by printing their renowned works on these water tanks. Although, this was not an easy task, given the difficulty of gaining approval for the same, but then, nothing is impossible especially when you have the will to do it.

Image 2

The water tanks have played the perfect canvas to some of the well known artists in New York. Jeff Koons, Andy Goldsworthy, Jay-Z, Ellen Gallagher, Devendra Banhart and Bruce Weber have all lent their creative works to Kickstarter, making their project an overnight hit with the classes as well as the masses. The biggest plus point with these water tanks is their overhead location and the way they create visibility and awareness from a distance as well. Keeping this creative yet resourceful concept in mind, there is hardly any doubt about the success of this overwhelming event which is yet to occur in the coming Spring of 2013.

Via: Psfk

1 Vote(s)

Jaspreet Kaur Walia:
Drinking and driving should never be clubbed together, but car scraps and wine surely be.
Sahil Khurana:
The Russian Matushka dolls are history, especially when compared with the Cell Phone Nesting Dolls chart. Similar to the model of the traditional doll set, the mobile set is the most informative way of teaching your children the evolution of the mobile phone. Classified as a very unique piece of art, the designer phone set beats competition single-handedly. It is the perfect example which epitomizes how technology has also undergone years of evolution, landing us in an era of advancement and up scaling.

Cell Phone Nesting Dolls

Designed by British designer Kyle Bean, the phone model links us perfectly with the working of the earliest models of the wonderful contraption. Taking its cue from the first ever available model, DynaTac, the sets encompasses nine evolutions within its bosom. Not only is the contraption really wonderful to look at, but it also serves as an example of how far we have come from the earlier times.

Each of the nine varieties of phones covered under this model fit into each other like a screw into a bolt. The nine models resemble each version of the phones which were launched as and when they were. But one striking concept is the way they have been made to fit into each other so neatly, leaving no space for any faults. The end of the series occurs with the iPhone, which represents the present generation standards.

Giving Kyle a pat on the back for coming up with such an ingenious idea, there is absolutely no doubt about his designing prowess and well to do imagination. Given his state of the art, there is hardly any going back into the history to actually refer to how and when the mobile phone became a hit.

Via: Psfk

1 Vote(s)

Deepon Mitra:
With depleting fresh water reserves, drinkable water will pretty soon end up being a rare resource. In addition, pollution, global warming, industrialization and population explosion continue to stretch water levels to breaking point. While new and innovative technologies are being implemented to recycle, store and purify water from different sources, it is always helpful to have a better technology as a backup for the worst case scenarios. A company called Takram asked its designers to come up with a futuristic water storage device. Instead, the designers outdid themselves and came up with a concept of artificial organs and augmentations that will actually assist the human body to retain and recycle large quantities of water.

The Complete Range of Artificial Organs

Takram has dubbed this concept as the "Shenu: Hydrolemic System". The system basically consists of a number of devices which are to be implanted at specific points of the human body. These augmentations will ensure that the body does not lose excess of moisture. They will also keep the water usage of the bodily metabolism at a minimal level.

The Shenu Hydrolemic System

Takram also plans to invent several add-ons to supplement this system. They concepts of lozenges that supply all the nutrients required by the body for 24hrs, an implant for the nasal cavity that prevents moisture lose via exhalation, jugular heat exchangers and inhibitors that lower water loss via perspiration from the upper body and also a separate implant that will be able to produce and store electricity by utilizing nothing but body heat.

Minimize loss of Body Moisture

People who have played the game Deus Ex would find familiarity between the concepts of Takram and the in-game augmentations.
Brown Bear:
Printed first in 1953, ‘Relativity’ is a lithograph that was uniquely produced by M.C.Escher, a Dutch artist. Its specialty is that it depicts a world without the laws of gravity. Thus there are 16 characters in the depiction which has not one but three different sources of gravity. And today, mimicking that genius of a depiction is a LEGO model which has been built by Paul Vermeesch. The only difference however is that instead of bulb-headed characters and an ancient setting, there are characters and environs from Star Wars trilogy .

Star Wars

The artist must be congratulated for his rigorous adherence to the original proportions and geometry. The work is as true as can be but is colorful instead of a monochrome. The diorama has been built with a great number of scenes and details. Looking closely one sees a storm-trooper pacing the deserts, lost in search of two droids. One also finds Obi Wan Kenobi walking away fast after disabling a tractor beam. The Endor scene has been built with great details, complete with Ewoks and foliage. Another place which was a balcony in the original work has been made into a wind vane at cloud city where Luke Skywalker gets to know about his parentage.

Star Wars

The details only get deeper and better. At the center of the diorama is the throne room of Emperor Palpatine. This helps understand the symbolism of the central evil around which the galactic wars are being fought. The Hoth scene is impressive, complete with Tuantaun too! And the best part is that a small chamber on the outside of this 3D creation serves as a ‘projection room’ where Ian and Max, two more LEGO characters, watch a LEGO version of Star Wars. This short 10 minutes clip has been looped via an iPod.

Via: OhGizmo

1 Vote(s)

Dakshina Thakur:
If you are someone who has a heart for growing plants and herbs but have to always arch your shoulders for limited space and lighting, then here's something that should perk up your greenery senses. The amazingly conceptualized Green Wheel by DesignLibero is a new futuristic-looking indoor garden that offers people a great medium to grow plants and herbs.

DesignLibero

Designed extremely innovatively, the planter however derives inspiration from the NASA design and enables you to seamlessly cultivate your favorite plants and herbs indoors where there's inadequate lighting and space. Although the entire layout looks pretty interesting yet promising for those who love greenery, the indoor garden concept was originally a concept that NASA thought of somewhere in the 1980s.

Image 2

Well, whosoever's idea this is - a hats-off is something undoubtedly to be bagged. Nevertheless, the rotating green garden not only catches attention for providing a large output, but also grabs additional points for conserving energy and space. But what really contributes to the model's less energy consumption characteristic is the embedded structure that allows plants to be arranged around the light source.

Pretty interestingly, as the planter's wheel spins, the unique Green Wheel automatically waters the plants and keeps them growing. What may intrigue even further is the futuristic looking planter's inherent ability to hold up to eight feet of plants and its root. Too good for today's restricted spaces, isn't it?

Well, though DesignLibero is yet to divulge some more details on the exact mechanism, the model still looks incredible enough to accommodate around. Featuring an extremely clean, exquisite appearance, the Eco-friendly rotating appliance has (indeed) got all the right reasons to embellish your house's elegant layout. The indoor garden which has been inspired by the NASA design, however, is yet to remove the sheath off its availability.

Via: StumbleUpon

1 Vote(s)

Asmita Prasad:
Anyone who has ever spent a good amount of time wearing prescription glasses would know how irritating it can be to fumble with multiple pairs of glasses. Bifocals promise to solve the problem but one still needs to keep a pair of glasses with photochromic lens to counter the harsh sunlight. Designer Giulio Iacchetti too had been struggling with sever near-sightedness since his pre-teens and after a few decades of struggling with many pairs of glasses and dealing with jeers he came up with a handy and practical solution. Dubbed 4occhi which literally translates as "four eyes", the spectacular pair of spectacles comes with two pairs of glasses fitted into one simple reversible frame that lets users carry a couple of pairs of glasses right on their face!

4occhi Four eyes eyewear

4occhi Four eyes eyewear

Unlike classic bifocal lenses, the 40cchi glasses offer users the comfort of using the entirety of a lens for a single purpose without giving up the convenience of having two pairs in one.
Asmita Prasad:
Based upon an exclusive concept by Technopark® Zurich, the Partime watch epitomizes the art of Swiss watchmaking. With no blinking lights, no trickling and no ticking sounds, the unique watch is unlike any other timepiece that has ever been made and simply indicates time via a system that shows the amount of time that has elapsed and the amount of time that is remaining. This aspect immediately places the watch in the same league as an hourglass and has been promptly dubbed the ‘Swiss hourglass for the wrist'.

Partime- Hourglass for the wrist

Even though this description draws the image of an archaic apparatus that would make time telling a bit of a hassle, the Partime watch is far from being difficult to use. Practical and amazingly simple, the watch features two sets of scales- the one at the bottom indicates the minutes and the one on the left indicates the hours offering a graphic description of time.

Just as the sand trickles down to the bottom half of an hourglass and the amount of sand remaining in the top half indicates the time ‘remaining', the right and top of the scales show how much time is remaining. A secondary digital time display supplements the graphic indication of time. Once you push the button, the digital display gives you the time in numerical format and reverts back to the graphic display after five seconds.

Technopark® Zurich presents the exquisite Partime

Tested and manufactured in Switzerland, the Technopark Zurich original is waterproof up to 30 meters as well as impact-resistant. With a recessed mineral glass fronting the scratch-resistant display, the watch comes with a stainless steel case with a raised edge similar to a diver's watch and a 24mm silicone strap that looks new even after years of wear and can be changed as required. A variety of leather straps are also offered with the watch.

To set the time, a user simply has to just use a pointed object like a pen to press down on a small corrector that will allow them to set the hour, minute and seconds with the help of the button. The original CRV 2430 battery on the Partime Hourglass Watch stays good for 18-24 months from purchase. The limited edition watch comes numbered with each costing CHF 740 plus shipping.

1 Vote(s)

Radhicka S Saxena:
Are you really fond of doll houses and LEGO land? Did you spend hours gaping at Toyland printed on the cover of Noddy? If yes, then you should take a look at this marvelous miniature town created from paper. The craft brings to life the city of Tokyo. The artist has primarily fashioned the identical topography at the Asakusa district of Tokyo. The colorful landscape with all its charming niceties will steal your heart away.

City of Tokyo Entirely From Paper

The artist behind this wonderful creation is Yumiko Matsui. The talented craftsman is surprisingly a self taught artist. The only training she's had is the hours spent with her aunt, who was heavily into paper crafting, and made miniature houses from papyrus sheets. The NYC based but Osaka born artist wanted to showcase the cherished memories of her home town and the nostalgia made her fabricate Tokyo as she remembers it from colored paper.

That is right, only colored paper has been used to make this setup, which was pasted together with water based glue. Of course, the skill of folding paper came handy while crafting the marvel. The layout has the buildings, market place, roads and even little gals from the city. The Denpo-in street is lined with houses and shops. Details like traffic signals, zebra crossings, high rises, tea houses and the vendors selling food are really endearing. The toy gals are actually known as “Shibuya girls.”

What's even more overwhelming is how the artist has got the entire lifeline of Tokyo just right. Moreover, an exhibit made only from paper deserves special attention. Without a doubt, that is a very eco friendly undertaking, isn't it? The whole neat and clean arrangement makes it hard to believe that a down to earth and simple methodology like paper crafting was used to build it.

Via: Inhabitat

1 Vote(s)

Sahil Khurana:
With the Motorized Laptop, never again would you have to make manual adjustments to the screen. The whole concept has been devised by designer Tobias Toft, who designed this ingenious idea for his final project at CIID.

Motorised laptop

By fitting in a motorized device into the laptop, Toft has been able to control the angle of the lid, making it open and close automatically. This is not all, for he has even installed an Arduino board within the computer's machinery, which has further been coupled up with a Servomotor letting the computer do wonders. The motherboard of the laptop and the motor make the contraption do wonders. This piece of machinery has been rigged in such a way that it brings about a revolution in the way technology has been modified to serve our needs.

The whole programming has been done on the Open Frameworks software and it allows the laptop to automatically figure out the position of the user. In turn, the webcam and the microphone of the computer move the lid around by judging the position of the user's face. The touch sensor's make the experience all the more lightheaded and interesting. The creativity of the designer reflects in every bit of the designing involved and makes everything stand out in the best of ways.

Via: Portfolio

1 Vote(s)

Jaspreet Kaur Walia:
The world is going electric when it comes to answering transportation needs. People are looking out for reliable forms of transportation that are efficient as well as practical. Keeping all this in mind, designer Mikael Shevelkin has come up with a lightweight two-wheel ride named Virgin Scooter designed especially for the Virgin Brand.

Virgin Scooter

Virgin Scooter is an easy to maintain ride that will be perfect for going shopping, work, short trips around the city and will fulfill general transportation needs. The small sized scooter will not fall down on the comfort graph and is easy to operate as well as maintain. It can be used by one person at a time to move from one place to the other without depending on public transport. The electric ride comes embedded with two taillights, one placed on the rear fender and the other under the seat that increases visibility when dusk sets in. It comes complete with turn signals wedged in the fenders to let others know which way you are heading.

Lights slither out of the fender when switched on, which in turn brightens up a good amount area on the road. The steering has a very interesting shape, inspiration of which has been fetched from the natural steering of a horse. No electric ride is complete without a battery pack. This has been used well to come up with a battery pack that can be detached from the underside of the scooter, which can be rolled on wheels and kept at a safe place when not in use, to make sure it is not stolen. It will also prove to be helpful in case the power outlet is at some place where the scooter cannot reach. Virgin Scooter is very pleasant to look at which will win hearts with its functionality and compact design.

[Cheers Mikael]

1 Vote(s)

Shallu Sharma:
Booze and cruise don't mix- a caution that is universal for alcohol consumers. Driving cars after alcohol consumption may be a hazardous combination but apparently we've stumbled upon an exception where boozing and driving are ay-okay! Don't get your hopes too high though for the expression is more figurative than pragmatic. The consequence of boozing is not only stupor but also a lot of cans, colorful and attractive cans which are even more alluring when full. Nonetheless, empty cans have been given a second lease of exhibition here as they are deftly crafted into crackerjack looking vehicle models. So now you can display the "aggregation of good times" with pals and family in the shape of handcrafted vehicle models.

Beer can vehicle

Beer can vehicle

Beer can vehicle

Beer can vehicle

Beer can vehicle

Beer can vehicle

Beer can vehicle

Beer can vehicle

Beer can vehicle

Beer can vehicle

Beer can vehicle

Beer can vehicle

Beer can vehicle

Beer can vehicle

Beer can vehicle

1 Vote(s)

While the sofa bed, transforming coffee tables that can also be used as storage and other witty items, we have seen over the years have all been very functional in their own way, we must say that none of them appear to have been as good as this seesaw bench.

Transforming Seesaw Bench

The handiwork of rather imaginative artists Dirk Ploos van Amstel who perhaps find it hard to contain in inner child against the stark realities of adulthood and its responsibilities, the wooden bench looks and works just like any ordinary bench until you pull its top apart and nudge the legs together and use it as a memorable bit of playground equipment.

The artist has not given any details regarding how much weight this bench can withstand both in bench and seesaw mode. It is not known whether it is actually safe for use by anyone over the age of 13. Judging by the delicate looks of it, we are guessing half the world's population under six years of age struggling with obesity would not be able to use it to play with (that is why they make seesaws in steel BTW). However, it still does make one heck of a bench where kids can sit and play the seesaw games on their Wiis, Xbox 360s, or PS3s.

Via: Gizmodo

1 Vote(s)

Radhicka S Saxena:
Most games and videos restrict children's activities to indoor settings. However, encouraging children to go out in the open and get physically active is very important. And it looks like a new playful product designed for outdoor environments might do just that. This groovy product called Son-X Octavia will pep up any play environment and transform it into a joshing and bubbly gathering. The contraption is essentially an interactive sound system that can be clasped on swing sets in a playground.

Solar-powered Son-X playgrounds

Three different recordings will boom out from the device. The fun filled sound recordings that are very much like a series of gags and hoots will be set off after a child spends sufficient time on the swing. After the first sound goes off from the coconut-esque contraption, the second series begins to play in some time, and this sequential system goads the curiosity of children urging them to spend more time outdoors.

The three sounds that liven up the play ambiance are actually an applause, concert whoopee's and thumping beats. Furthermore, the sound emitting device is actually fastened with a downward orientation on the chain of a swing so that the blast from it is maximized. The solar powered wireless piece doesn't let any messy cables loiter around making the surroundings safe for children's use. Additionally, the easy to install device will have upgrades coming out in the future, which will be available on USB drives.

Manufacturers have kept in mind that the target market is modestly budgeted schools and so the contraption will not cost much. The piece available for $624 or €499 is mostly being sold via B2B connections. The item is currently being shipped to many schools throughout Europe. The innovation of this contraption goes to say that the digital movement is spreading out into fresh and green settings beckoning children to come out and play.

Via: Son Xplay/ Engadget

1 Vote(s)

Radhicka S Saxena:
A bunch of metallic flowers drooping down. Alien pods nesting on an elongated base. A lot of chubby balloons tied up together. No matter how many times you look at this sculpture something new will come to your mind. Its function, in any case, is quite obvious. This is a street lamp that has a futuristic, neoteric and natal design. Complex and biological forms like this are fast replacing the clean cut and streamlined designs that were in fashion up till now.

Solar Tree

The design dubbed as solar tree has been crafted by Ross Lovegrove. Its sculpture like beauty gives a new dimension to the shape and form of street lights that have looked dull and unsightly so far. The urbane and striking design will totally transform the look of future streets and cities. The way this design is sturdy and mechanized but also aesthetic and delicate is quite extraordinary.

Solar panels as well as LED lights have been outfitted together in it. The light can illuminate for three days nonstop using only solar power. It also works with grid technology. The Al system slotted in it is programmed to switch LED lights on at night automatically. The intensity of the luminescence can be adjusted depending on energy level of the batteries or the irradiation in its surroundings.

The unit shown in the picture above has been put together for the UK installation at St. John’s square in London. It stands there until late September this year for the Olympic and Paralympic games. The piece churned out for Artemide will also serve as an exhibit at the Clerkenwell Design Week 2012. It has six solar panels and four large sized lights. There are also 20 stems and 10 grass like stalks jutting out.

Via: Designboom

1 Vote(s)

Asmita Prasad:
The Avengers was undoubtedly one of the most refreshing superhero loaded movie to have hit the theaters in a long time even though most of the movie was pretty predictable drawing sighs and applause only for the antics of the Hulk. However, the instant classic went down as an instant must have superhero movie as well and we weren't at all surprised that someone used the form of the Helicarrier (SHIELD's flying base that hosts the Avengers as they are brought up to speed with the impending doom that awaits humankind in the movie) to create a Blu-Ray disc holder case.

30-disc Avengers Helicarrier case

With space for as many as 30 discs, the Avengers' Helicarrier inspired Blu Ray Disc Case is a very rough copy of the carrier depicted in the movie and its creator intends to refine it much further with additional detailing making it a much more authentic collectible. By increasing the space in the carrier's main hull, the disc holder's capacity could be increased to 50 discs which would be more than enough to store your original copies of all your favorite /Marvel comic-based movies.

The Helicarrier would also boast of features like removable wings that would serve as individual cases with the case standing in at 12″ tall and 26″ long and possessing a 16″ wingspan.

Via: Dvice

1 Vote(s)

Radhicka S Saxena:
This smashing technology will make even the biggest of high definition screens melt like ice in the hot sun. Yeah! That is possible. Also, you won't be heading out to the cinema that often to catch the latest 3D flick. Your craze for this too will just fade away. This hot shot technology brings to your living room full sized images, which will be in action right next to you, alive and kicking.

AV Video Glasses

The contraption that makes this unbelievable view possible is a humble pair of eye glasses. These sleek glasses have to be worn over the head and then a small screen will flap out covering your eyes. That's just like the glasses you see in sci-fi flicks. Remember the shades that the old doc from Back to the Future wore. Coming back to the point, these glasses will flash a virtual screen in front of your eyes, which will have a whopping 36 inch display.

Put on these AV Videos glasses whenever you want to watch a movie or a video game. You won't be a spectator anymore but instead a part of the happenings rolling onscreen. All characters are alive and breathing whether you are glued to the Xbox360, PS3, Wii or your DVD player. This doodad works with all AV devices.

Wear these light and comfortable glasses for as long as you want. Hours will pass by and you won't feel a thing. Its advanced LCoS screen will not hurt your eyes. There is no software installation required and the setup process happens in a jiffy. You can swivel the goggles up and down smoothly. Moreover, the blast from its audio speakers creates quite a pitch.

Another piece of good news is that all this doesn't come at an unreachable skyrocketing cost. The glasses will actually cost (about $215) less than a brand new television! Technology is surely getting larger than life. Duh! Don't just stand there with your jaw agape. Go ahead and grab one right now.

Via: Chinavasion

1 Vote(s)

Asmita Prasad:
In the world of recreational lawn games, Croquet has got to be the undoubted king with its slow paced game play and leisurely scoring scenarios leaving little scope for competitiveness though one could certainly break a smug opponent's face with the big business end of the mallet. Since the game isn't exactly a sponsor-attracting sport, big sports merchandize making brands like Adidas, RBK and Puma just aren't interested in spending money on developing modern gear for it. This is where the innovation of French designer Romain Lagrange really comes into play.

Lagrange’s Croquet

On view at WantedDesign, his wooden croquet set dubbed “Gates” charmed the silly trousers off everyone present and the croquet set he designed was equally well praised. The prototype costs well over $400 though the set comprises of two balls, two stakes, six sycamore maple gates and a mallet made of custom-made compressed cork with a leather-wrapped hand-stitched handle. The entire set also comes with a tidy little carrying case of its own with a leather strap matching the handle of the mallets.

Showcased at NY Design Week 2012, the design opens up the possibility of the game being played by its patrons even in adverse weather like when it's too damn cold to hold the metal handle or when you've just had a great manicure and wouldn't want to spoil it with a rowdy round of croquet!

Via: Core77

1 Vote(s)
