schmidt hammer lassen architects recently completed their addition to the rudolf steiner school in aarhus,
denmark. the school uses the waldorf education model founded by austrian philosopher rudolf steiner.
the new addition to the schoold was designed with this interdisciplinary approach to education in mind.
the design incorporates an angular roof that gives each interior room a different shape. the plan was also
designed so each room avoided uniform shapes, instead creating a variety of open-plan and intimate
areas for learning. the area outside the building is designed for outdoor classrooms, sheltered in part by
the large eaves and raw wood beams of the roof. the construction was pre-fabricated in germany and
assembled on location in only five months. the design was led by schmidt hammer lassen partner
morten schmidt, a former student of the school.
