Travelon began 25 years ago as Travel Caddy, one of the first manufacturers of luggage carts in the United States. Travel Caddy had a reputation for creating innovative, solidly engineered products rigorously tested for safety and performance… and that made travel easier. These qualities have not changed.

In the early 90’s, Travel Caddy expanded into the business of luggage manufacturing – and eventually into the design and sourcing of travel accessories and soft goods. Today, we are as much a product design and sourcing company as we are a travel product company.


Overview:
We are seeking to fill an immediate opening for an enthusiastic cut & sew Industrial Designer. Combine your knowledge of design and fashion to conceptualize non-apparel (bag) products into viable prototypes. Please note: this is not a sample or pattern maker position. Travelon will provide sample and pattern makers to implement this process. However, the Industrial Designer should have a good knowledge of production and sewing techniques to facilitate sample development and production.

Job Duties:
• Research products, markets and materials
• Initiate and interpret new product concepts to meet the needs of our customers
• Provide sketches, line art, prototypes, design boards, and presentations to communicate design ideas
• Coordinate with the Product Development team to refine concepts as needed and work within target product prices to assure most effective results
• Participate in design, product development reviews, Trade Shows and marketing meetings as needed
• Interact with China office, factories and product management teams to ensure timelines are met and consistent with customer specifications
• Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:
• Degree in Industrial Design, Product Design or Creative Engineering
• Minimum 3 years product design experience, preferably within the soft-goods, luggage or bag business
• Ability to communicate product concepts verbally, and through written or sketched communications
• Must have some working knowledge of cut and sew operations: fabrics, materials, color, style, pattern making, fabrication methods, sewing construction techniques, etc.
• Must be able to translate closed-end design problems into product solutions
• Must have or be willing to develop an understanding of off-shore sourcing and production facilities
• Ability to work effectively under timelines in a dynamic, fast paced and entrepreneurial environment
• Must be organized, self-disciplined and self-directed
• Ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently
• Must be able to work effectively on different product lines (luggage, hardware, insulated products, sporting goods, adventure, etc)
• Outstanding communication, presentation and persuasion skills
• Proficient in the entire Microsoft Office Package: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook
• Computer design experience with Adobe Creative Suite: Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, etc.
• Computer design experience with Solidworks or other CAD software experience a plus
• Must possess a well-developed ability to read, write and speak English. Ability to speak Chinese a plus
• Must be able to travel internationally to Asia a couple of times a year to work with China teams as needed
• Ability to lift 50 pounds
